Step-By-Step Guide to Holistic Health

Many of us avoid embarking on a new journey to overall health and wellness because we think it’s just too overwhelming to consider all of the “big changes” we need to make. But what if we start with a gradual integration, making incremental changes one at a time? According to wellness experts, looking for ways to take small steps toward holistic healthy living that work with our everyday lifestyles means we start building habits, rather than going all-out on multiple self-improvement regimes that are likely to lose their luster. If you’re looking for inspiration to get you started on your own healthy path to wellness, visit the Sage Massage and Acupuncture blog.

Active Integration

People come in all shapes, sizes, and levels of ability, and we all enjoy differing degrees and types of physical activity. Recognizing the benefits of having an active lifestyle and finding ways to incorporate this healthy behavior into your own life, consider what you already do that you can step up a degree or two. For example, if you enjoy taking walks, download a trail app and look for longer scenic routes, or take it one step higher and start hiking. If you dance for fun, considering enrolling in a dance class. Some people do better on their own, while others prefer online or in-person group exercise environments. Whatever you enjoy, just kick it up a notch and start seeing the associated health benefits that follow!

Choosing to Eat Right

We all have different relationships with food, where some of us use it as a comfort mechanism, while others view it simply as fuel. Regardless of where you fall on the spectrum, start making an effort to incorporate more healthy foods you enjoy while eliminating unhealthy snacks and food items that make you feel tired, fatigued, and blasé. According to Self, challenge yourself to try a new recipe each week, or even replace one less-than-healthy food option with fresh fruits, vegetables, or whole grains. As you start changing your diet and moving the needle to the healthy side, you’ll start to notice how much better you feel and be encouraged to keep up the good habits.

Addressing Dental Health Problems

Many people don’t realize that oral health can play a significant role in your overall health, both physically and mentally. In addition to the link between dental health and heart disease, the state of your teeth has also been connected to depression. So, if you’re suffering from any dental problems that you’ve been putting off, now’s the time to address them. Misaligned teeth, for example, can make it difficult to keep your teeth clean, which can lead to numerous health issues. Fortunately, there are many affordable options these days that can keep you out of the dentist’s chair. At-home aligners such as byte provide people with affordable care that addresses misaligned teeth without the need for costly braces or trips to the orthodontist. Additionally, byte’s HyperByte vibration device can provide results in around three months. The sooner you take steps to improve your overall dental health, the better you’ll look and feel.

Minding Your Mental Health

Mental and emotional health is just as important to your overall well-being as physical health. Take time to relax, rejuvenate, and simply “be,” rather than feel like you must be constantly on the go. Take a break from screens and build quiet time into every day. Don’t feel selfish about taking time for yourself, whether you’re enjoying a meditative session, restorative yoga, or time with a good book. Herbal teas are also a very healthy way to unwind at the end of the day. Many people look at self-care measures as the time they’re taking away from their family or their work, when in reality, the more you care for yourself, the better you position yourself to take care of others.

Re-envision Your Environment

The things you surround yourself with have a direct impact on your mental and emotional health and well-being. If you and your family live in messy squalor, it can lead to feelings of disjointed unhappiness, bickering, and critical thinking. Take some time to do a full house cleanup, donating or getting rid of items you don’t need, reinventing your space, letting in fresh air and light, and making your house a haven of retreat. According to Psychology Today, finding tangible ways to boost your mood and sense of well-being can lead to an overall better quality of life.

Consider your health journey a holistic one in which you’re not just looking at how to eat and exercise better, but how to treat yourself with mindful kindness from head to toe. Get plenty of sleep, drink lots of water, make time for the things that you enjoy in life, and encourage your loved ones to do the same.

Comparing Swedish vs. Deep Tissue Massage

While Sage Massage Therapy offers both Swedish Massage and Deep Tissue Massage it’s important to understand the differences and benefits of each type of massage.

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is the most commonly offered massage technique, utilizing light to medium pressure and long smooth gliding strokes.  It relaxes skin surface tension as well as the nervous system to soothe the nerves, reducing both emotional and physical stress.  Swedish massage is a staple in most stress management programs.

  • Reduce stress & anxiety
  • Increase blood circulation
  • Ease whole body tension
  • Release toxins & metabolic waste from muscle tissue
  • Boost immune system via lowering stress cortisol levels

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is that “hurt so good” medium to heavy pressure that aims at affect the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue.  The massage therapist will choose between several strokes depending on the size of the muscle that they are working on.  The aim is to treat chronic muscle pain & sports related injuries.

  • Treatment of whiplash and sports injuries
  • Chronic low back pain
  • Postural misalignment
  • Muscle spasms, strains and knots.
  • Breaks up scar tissue & fascial adhesions
  • Improves muscle flexibility & reduce recovery time from muscle strain.

If you’re in the Grand Lake Colorado or Grand County Colorado areas and you are considering a swedish massage or a deep tissue massage, please give us a call to learn more or book your appointment.

Mental Health

Major depression and anxiety affect more than 28 million American annually. Depression is among the ten most frequently reported medical conditions.

Many patients seek alternative therapies because they cannot tolerate the side effects of antidepressant medications, such as SSRI’s (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) and MAO (monomine oxidase) inhibitors. Chinese Medicine – both herbs and acupuncture – offer safer treatment and significant help.

According to Chinese medicine, there are seven emotions that a person can experience: joy, anger, worry, pensiveness, sadness, fear and fright (shock). These are normal emotions and healthy responses. But when these feeling occur for no apparent reason and are persistent, depression has set in. In the Eastern view, worry, anger, and sadness are signs of depression and can affect their associated organs, the heart, spleen, and liver.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) uses a variety of techniques such as acupuncture, herbal medicine and diet recommendations to treat an individual’s specific depression symptoms. Acupuncture increases cerebral serotonin, which has anti-depressant effects. Acupuncture can minimize insomnia, fatigue, and other symptoms of depression.

In conjunction with Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture can be an effective treatment that corrects the internal imbalance or root cause of the disease. If you are taking anti-depressants, we can prescribe Chinese herbs that work in conjunction with your medication to address your symptoms.

Headaches and Migraines

In Chinese Medicine, headaches are considered to be the experience of stagnation or turbulence in the circulation of energy and blood flow. This may be due to injury or internal imbalances in the organ systems created by the stressful lifestyles that most of us lead.

Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs have an excellent chance to not only relieve a headache in progress but to eliminate the source of the headaches and help restore a person to an improved quality of life. You will start to feel better in a few weeks but in order to treat the underlying cause it usually takes 2 months.

Acupuncture is not only effective for migraine headaches, but also works very well with tension headaches, cluster headaches, post-traumatic headaches, and disease-related headaches that might be due to sinus problems or high blood pressure.

Pain is caused by a blockage in circulation. When you have a lack of blood flow, your muscles and nerves do not get the nutrients they need to function normally.

· Muscle tightness presses on nerves

· Muscle tightness presses on blood vessels and stops normal blood flow

· Acupuncture relaxes muscles

· Acupuncture restores normal circulation and blood flow

In treatment of headaches and migraines, there is also the exploration of what triggers may be present in your life. Avoiding these triggers, and improving the diet and lifestyle in general are some the additional ways in which migraines and headaches can be avoided.
